I’m sure there’s many out there who are unfamiliar with this Japanese toy. Kendama is like a cross between a hacki sack and a ball-and-cup game, which I admit sounds all kinds of lame . When my brother in law came over the other day with one though, as stupid as this thing sounds, I got hooked to it. Kendama started out as “Bilboquette” in France and eventually made it’s way around in one way or another to other countries. The Kendama design has been around in Japan since the ’70s, and kind of lost popularity for a while. They seem to be building in popularity in Japan again with rollerbladers and skateboarders. A group of professional skateboarders started the “KendamaUSA” team a few years back, and have been working hard to make the sport more popular in the states. Check them out!
